AD Utility renovation with a warm minimal Scandi look

3/14/2019

We’re lucky to have a utility room in our home. It’s one of the last rooms to get attention, but I’m really pleased with the result of the renovations. As you might have seen from my mood board, I’ve gone for a warm minimal Scandi look. It goes well with the rest of the house and it has brightened up the space an incredible amount.

It used to be a dark,  uninviting space with not much to show for it. It was a room full of washing and chaos. I don’t mind doing the washing anymore, I actually quite like it. Ever time I enter this room it puts a smile on my face and I could quite happily spend hours here.

The washing machine and dryer are both from Miele and I have to say, they are both brilliant. I’m really happy with them. They are so easy to use and both very economical with A+++ ratings. We’ve heard so many good things about Miele from friends and I totally get why. The quality is outstanding in comparison to other washing machines we’ve had in the past.

The reason why we chose this machine was because of the efficiency, but also because of all the different washing programs. My favourite program is the hand wash program. I don’t like hand washing clothes, so this is a huge treat! There’s no shrinking and just a very gentle wash. It’s great. I would normally leave my hand wash until I really had to do it, but now it all gets done straight away.

I like the option of using the CapDosing. Instead of adding detergent yourself, the washing machine does it for you. So how does this work. Well, the appliance dispenses the contents at the perfect point in the wash process – completely automatically. I know, this is all very futuristic, but I think it’s a really great feature. There are 6 special detergents available Sport, Down, Outdoor, WoolCare, SilkCare, Proofing agent), 3 softeners (Aqua, Nature, Cocoon). The washing comes out with a lovely fragrant scent.

Another feature I really like is the Intelligent washing. All Miele washing machines feature intelligent automatic load recognition. This feature analyses the current load and uses only the amount of water and electricity needed for excellent cleaning and rinsing results. This is so clever and leads to less waste. Brilliant!

With our old washing machine the washing always came out soaking wet and took ages to dry. This isn’t the case anymore. I’m so happy that it’s a thing of the past. The 1400 spin is great. It’s such an efficient machine and I simply love it!

Miele tumble dryer and washing machine

Heat-pump tumble dryer TCE520WP Active Plus

The Heat-pump tumble dryer is the model TCE520WP Active Plus by Miele. Not only is it A+++ and super energy efficient, but the PerfectDry detects the mineral content of the water and modifies the drying process. This means that the washing is always perfectly dry. Amazing, don’t you think? It’s a long way away from how I used to do the washing. We’ve never had a dryer before, so it was a case of hanging it up, most of the time somewhere annoying like in the kitchen. The washing rack would be both an eyesore and in the way, not to mention take ages to dry. So for me to be able to do 3 or more loads of washing in a day and have it all dried straight away is magical! This has completely changed my view on washing clothes. I don’t mind it anymore. It’s totally ok. I never thought I would say that.

Can you see the light that goes on inside the machine when you turn it on? How cool is that?! Nothing will ever be left in the machine, as you can see it all clearly.

I’m really glad we added a tap and a sink in our laundry room. The dryer is really easy to use. All you do is empty the water out of the container, remove some fluff and that’s pretty much it. It’s so simple and the room isn’t humid at all. You wouldn’t even know there was a dryer in the room. I’m really impressed by that.

Another thing I really like about the TCE520WP Active Plus are all the different drying programs. It’s great to have so many options. The FragranceDos gives the laundry a nice fragrance. There are 5 options to choose from. Another benefit with this machine is that the laundry comes out pretty crease free. There’s not much ironing needed, which is a huge bonus. I hate ironing! Who doesn’t?!

If you’re looking for a new washing machine or a dryer, we would highly recommend these appliances. I have a promo code for you, use code HEGE19 and get 10% off all Miele laundry appliances on miele.co.uk until the end of June.

Custom Fronts

The panels and cupboard door are from Custom Fronts. The white oiled birch ply door has a very cool cut out oblong hand-routed handle. The craftsmanship is incredible and it’s great that the materials are sustainable too. I wanted to add some warmth to this room and feel like the addition of wood has made that possible. If you’re looking for a kitchen makeover, you should check out the great options from Custom Fronts. They have some beautiful, timeless designs that I’m sure you’ll love. You can see more here. I love all the details. Here’s a kitchen I styled for Custom Fronts a while back. Stunning don’t you think?

Utility Room Tiles from Gemini Tiles

When it came to choosing the floor tiles, I went for a warm neutral colour. We had a cold concrete floor before, so I wanted to make sure the space felt warmer. The floor tiles are called Sintesis Marfil and are from CTD Tiles. The tiles I chose are 600×600 mm, but they come in different sizes. These luxury porcelain natural effect tiles are easy to clean and with the light grey grout I think they go perfectly with the rest of the materials used.

I’ve added a peg rack for extra storage. It goes well with the units from Custom Fronts and the nice floor from CTD tiles. As does the wooden brush set. I might add some shelves, but I want to live with this for a while first. I think it’s better to see how the room works before adding too much.

Want to see what it looked like before? It wasn’t great. I used to be in and out as quickly as possible!

what the utility room used to look like

This was taken during the renovations. We had to level the floor before the tiles were put down. We also added insulation and plasterboard, then filled and taped the gaps and painted it. It took us a few weeks for it to be all done, but we couldn’t be happier with the result. We love our newly renovated utility room and I think it’s actually one of my favourite rooms in the house. What do you think?!
